I keep my skincare routine very simple but there are a few nonnegotiables and vitamin C is one of them! Vitamin c is touted as a “holy grail” ingredient by scientists, dermatologists and the like, and for good reason. This potent antioxidant is known for its ability to rebuild your skin’s DNA at a cellular level. Not only does it give you that luminous complexion we’re all after, but it has a lot of healing and restorative properties as well. So, here’s why vitamin C should be a part of your skincare routine:
Increases collagen production
Collagen is the body’s most abundant protein and often hailed as the “fountain of youth” in the beauty space. It’s what helps our skin cells renew and repair themselves and gives our skin that plump, youthful look. Collagen is found in our bones, muscles, tendons and skin and is the main component of connective tissue that provides the structure to hold our bodies together and withstand the stretching of tissues. As we age past 30, our collagen production naturally decreases, which leads to thinning skin and a loss of elasticity (aka wrinkles). Vitamin C increases collagen production within your skin cells which helps to fill in fine lines and wrinkles and prevent sagging.
Evens out skin tone
If you suffer from dark spots or under eye circles, vitamin C could help improve your skin’s complexion. Studies have shown vitamin C to even out skin tone, creating more radiant and youthful looking skin. It’s also been shown to brighten the skin’s overall appearance, leaving it feeling revitalized and replenished. I don’t know about you, but I’m all for that dewy, glowy skin!
Protects against sun damage
Sun damage is the easiest and fastest way you can damage your skin – and exposing yourself to harmful UV rays can cause premature aging and your skin to lose its elasticity. Not to mention, prolonged exposure to UV rays can also put you at a higher risk for skin cancer. Luckily, vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that can protect your skin from damage against harmful UV rays. It works to combat exposure to free radicals and helps to neutralize them. This increases the strength and elasticity of the skin (aka less sun spots and skin damage). Combining vitamin C with SPF protects your skin from sun damage even more than SPF alone – so they’re often referred to as the dynamic duo.
If you’re like me and have ever woken up feeling puffy, then here’s another reason vitamin C should be a part of your skincare routine – it reduces inflammation and puffiness. Vitamin C has anti-inflammatory properties making it ideal for combatting a swollen face or puffiness under the eyes.
