Why I Recommend Walking Without Distractions

If you listen to my podcast or follow me on IG, then you know I love my walks! Walking is so therapeutic and has a plethora of health benefits, which is why I’ve incorporated them into my daily routine. Lately, I’ve been enjoying my walks sans music, podcasts, or any other distractions, and I have to say, I’ve noticed a huge difference in my mood and overall mental health. I used to always listen to something during my walks, whether it be a podcast or book, but giving my mind a mental break has been a huge game changer! Now, I observe the sounds around me and pay attention to things I never used to notice before. It also allows me time to think and give myself a much needed mental break. So, here are a few reasons I recommend walking without distractions.

Relieves stress

We are already bombarded with a million distractions throughout the day, whether it be a text message, email or social media, and walking without your phone gives you so much freedom. Studies show that limiting distractions, including your screen time, can help reduce stress and anxiety, improve sleep, and boost your mood. There’s a reason the phrase ‘clear your head’ is often associated with going for a walk.

Boosts creativity

Have you ever had a great idea come to you in the shower? Well, it’s probably because your mind was free of distractions. The same can be said about walking, especially in nature. The art of walking without a purpose or without distractions allows you to think more freely. I often find myself inspired by things I notice during my walks like the sound of birds chirping or the beautiful scenery that I may have otherwise missed.

Improves mindfulness

If you ever feel stuck in a rut, mindfulness could be the key to feeling better. So much of what we think impacts our daily lives and how we feel. Having a lack of energy or motivation to do even the simplest things can take a toll on not only your productivity, but your overall happiness as well. Luckily, we have the power to choose our thoughts which sets the tone for how we’re feeling. Walking without distractions forces you to be mindful of your surroundings, your thoughts and your feelings. If you can take some time to intentionally be mindful by going for daily walks, then it could help you be more mindful throughout the day.

Promotes gratitude

Walking without distractions allows you to appreciate the simple things that you discover on your walks. Whether it’s the smell of fresh air, the feeling of warmth on your face, or the happiness it brings your dog (if you’re walking with a furry friend) there are so many little things to be grateful for that we often take for granted. Having reminders to practice gratitude everyday will help us find happiness in even the simplest of things. If we appreciate the small things, then our gratitude for larger things will only intensify. You have the choice to look at everything as a miracle, or nothing as a miracle, but the choice is up to you; the same goes for your happiness.

Overall, walking free of distractions makes me happier because I’m more mindful, creative and appreciative of the time to listen to my thoughts and feelings. I’d love to know it you’ve tried it and how you liked it!
