We all know that morning routines are trending right now and you know I take mine—and my daily mindfulness practices—seriously, but for me it’s just as important to slow down at the end of the day, put my work down and let go of the stress we often carry with us into the night. If I can bring as much thoughtfulness and attention into the latter part of the day as I do in the beginning, I find that I am way less anxious, I sleep better, I’m more present, more relaxed and more connected with my husband than if I just blaze through until I crash.
So here’s my challenge for you: one night this week try to sign off work (if you can) at a reasonable hour. Get the ingredients for your favorite recipe (if I’m cooking for Chuck 9 times out of 10 it’s pasta) or order your favorite takeout…then set the tone. Candles, music, a tablescape, make it a whole “thing” whether it’s just for you, you and a partner or a friend, whatever. Stay off the phone and just be there in that moment. Pretend you’re in Italy. Just really go for it! Romanticize your life then in that moment.
I’m making a conscious effort to do this a few times a month but to also take elements of this concept into my life daily if I can, whether it be music with dinner, setting a nice table even if it’s for takeout, putting the phone away after a certain hour, cooking etc. I shared an entire blog post on other ways to live a happier, more fulfilling life which can make a huge impact on your overall quality of life. Making mundane tasks like preparing dinner a little more special might seem insignificant, but can really change the way we think about and appreciate everyday moments. Whether it’s listening to music, lighting a candle or buying fresh flowers, the key is slowing down and taking the time to enjoy the moment.
I’d love to know some of your favorite ways to slow down and romanticize your life. Believe me when I say my stress and anxiety levels are lower when I slow down and set the tone for the night. I not only sleep better, but I have more energy and just feel better the next day. Let me know how it goes for you after you try – I know you won’t regret it!
